Heat pump roof, is it necessary?

Weather and wind wear hard on your outdoor part of the heat pump. Investing in a heat pump roof primarily protects against rain and snow, but also falling ice that can damage the heat pump exterior. Heat pump roofs can also protect against melt water that drips down and then freezes again, which can cause damage to the fan or in any case cause noise. It can be a profitable investment as the roofs do not usually cost more than SEK 1000-2000 and a repair of the outside part due to, for example, falling ice can cost even more.

There are different types of roofs, some in sheet metal, glass or wood. It is also possible to buy standard entrance roofs at hardware stores if there are some that fit better. Then you can also come down a bit in price if you choose the cheaper options.

To sum it up, it can be an affordable way to protect your outdoor area for the heat pump, but you also have to remember that the outdoor areas are made to be able to stand outside, day or night, summer or winter.

Heat pump protection

There is also heat pump protection, which is placed on the outside of the outdoor part. There are those that are made of wood, which allows you to paint it and modify it a little easier. There are also those made of metal and plastic. Some are open on the sides and also open at the bottom (like the picture below).

Heat pump protection in metal

The picture shows a metal heat pump cover. This particular protection has good airflow from below and the sides are also perforated, which increases the airflow compared to a compact metal plate. However, this can affect efficiency as it still slows down the air exchange.
